Action Alert, March 1, 2002PROLIFERS HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANCE OF TUESDAY’S ELECTION February 26, 2002 Further information: 916 442-8315 ext 304 or 626 859-2040 Officers of the California ProLife Council (CPLC) highlighted the importance of Tuesday’s election at a Sacramento press briefing today. The state affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee, and the largest pro-life organization in the state, announced that it is pulling out all the stops to ensure that prolifers get to the polls and elect candidates, “who will make a difference.” Executive Director Brian Johnston said that, “One of our highest priorities is the Governor’s race. Bill Riordan is pro-abortion, and would destroy any immediate hope of bringing California out of the abortion ‘dark ages’ Gray Davis has brought. On the other hand Bill Simon is a strong pro-life candidate, in the mold of George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan. Bill Simon is committed to a studied and reasonable approach to promoting and implementing pro-life public policy. We need him in the Governor’s chair.” The
latest Los Angeles Times poll released February 26th clearly shows a
dramatic change in support for gubernatorial candidates. Riordan’s
flip-flopping and new embrace of a hard-core pro-abortion position has hurt
his standing amongst likely Republican voters. Conversely, the polls also
indicate the positive impact being pro-life has on the surging Simon
campaign. The poll showed that twice as many voters are less likely to vote
for Riordan after hearing the description of Riordan saying "abortion
is murder" yet maintaining he supports the pro-choice position.
"The polling data
is clear. Riordan is suffering at the polls because of his extreme position
on abortion, while Simon is benefiting by having the same position as Ronald
Reagan, George Deukmejian and George W. Bush," said Lawrence Lehr,
Chairman of the California ProLife Political Action Committee. The organization’s Political Action Committee is also involved in numerous other races in the State Senate and Assembly as well as all the way down ballot in county supervisors, city councils and party central committee. More information on the campaign can be found at www.californiaprolife.org.
