STATE ACTION ALERT
Calls, Faxes, e-mails needed to oppose the cloning of
human embryos for research and destruction, and the
destruction of human embryos to extract stem cells for
research.
SB 1230 -- Bans so-called "reproductive
cloning," BUT allows cloning human beings for research
and destruction, euphemistically referred to as
"therapeutic cloning."
In reality, the cloning process is the same whether for research or reproduction, and results in the creation of whole human embryos. The only distinction is that one is created to be brought to full term, the other is created for exploitation and destruction in medical or scientific research projects.
SB 1272 -- Permits destructive research on human
embryos and requires that clients of infertility programs
who opt to discard "excess" embryos be presented the
alternative of donating them for research and
destruction.
It is a great tragedy of our time that we have created thousands of embryos who are stored in a frozen state in infertility clinics around our country. These tiny human embryos are finally beginning to be made available for adoption by loving couples. Although the option of donating these embryos is referenced in SB 1272, California ProLife Council believes that this is the only acceptable option that should be promoted by the state when the parents are unable or unwilling to accept these babies themselves.
SCR 55-- Establishes a 14 member panel to advise the
Legislature on stem cell research.
We are opposed to the creation of this
panel, whose members would be appointed by the Speaker of the
Assembly and the Senate Rules Committee, because there is no
hope that such a panel would value the lives of these
tiny human embryos or respect their right to life.
California ProLife Council believes that innocent human life in all of its stages is entitled to the protection of the law, and that human embryos should not be created for the purpose of research, and that so-called “excess” embryos should be adopted and called by name, not exploited by our medical and scientific communities. Call or FAX your own senator, and those members of
the Senate Health & Human Services Committee listed below.
We expect all three of these bills to be taken up
on Wednesday, March 20 (1:30 p.m., Room 4203, State Capitol).
Phone calls or faxes will receive more attention than
e-mails. Separate faxes
or e-mails for each bill would also be helpful. If
you use e-mail, state your opposition in the subject line
-- e. g. "Oppose SB 1230-- cloning humans for
research." Senate
Health & Human Services Committee: Deborah Ortiz (Chair) (D-6), 916-445-7807, FAX 323-2263, Senator.Ortiz@sen.ca.gov
