Legislative Action Alerts- October 21, 2003

Facts of Life—October 21, 2003—two action items!

ACTION ALERT-- #1
Your immediate action is needed to help save the life of Terri Schindler-Schiavo.
Terri's feeding tube was removed last Wednesday and she has now been six days without food or water.   Last night, at the urging of Governor Jeb Bush, the Florida State House passed a bill authorizing the Governor to order her feeding tube to be reinserted and for her feeding to be resumed immediately.  The bill is now in the Florida State Senate.  Calls, faxes, and e-mails are urgently needed to Florida State Senate President, Jim King urging him to pass "Terri's Bill," authorizing the Governor to have the feeding of Terri resumed.
Time is crucial for Terri.  Please Act Immediately and alert all chapter telephone and e-mail trees, notify churches or anyone who might be capable of activating calls, faxes and emails.

Latest Update On The Terri Schiavo Case (10/22/03)

ACTION Item #2:  Call Senator Dianne Feinstein to ask that she support the nomination of California Supreme Court Associate Justice Janice Brown for the nomination to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.  Janice Rogers Brown is a brilliant, principled judge and the first African-American woman to serve on the CA Supreme Court.  Brown wrote a stinging dissent to the Ca Supreme Court decision that said it was unconstitutional to involve parents in minors’ abortions.  A hearing is expected to be held this week in the U.S. Senate Judiciary committee on her nomination, and Senator Feinstein has agreed to meet with Justice Brown prior to the hearing.
Dianne Feinstein:              202-224-3841                     FAX 202-228-3954
                                    415-393-0707                     FAX 415-393-0710

The U.S. Senate is expected to give final approval this week, possibly today, to the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act (S. 3), clearing the measure for President Bush's signature.  For more information on this go to www.nrlc.org, where this issue is second on the home page.

In a survey that included 171 interest groups and involved interviews with over 95 congressional staffers, National Right to Life Committee ranked 8th most effective on advocacy in health-related issues.  No other pro-life group was listed among the top 25, and Planned Parenthood Federation of America and NARAL ranked 12th and 14th respectively.  See the article at http://www.thehill.com/news/100103/ss_heaney.aspx.

Terri Schiavo, a 38 year old woman who has been declared by courts in Florida to be in a "persistent vegetative state," despite evidence to the contrary, has been deprived of food and water by court order since October 15.  Disability rights organizations like Not Dead Yet and other individuals and organizations have flocked to Florida to try to save her life.  Saturday, Msgr. Thaddeus F. Malanowski sought and was refused the ability to give her Holy Communion.  Gov. Jeb Bush, apparently having exhausted all usual court remedies, called an emergency session of the Florida Legislature for yesterday to consider a bill that would immediately halt all starvation deaths in Florida.  Read about these and other circumstances of this distressing situation at www.LifeNews.com.

October is Breast Cancer awareness month, but don’t expect any attention to focus on the well-documented research connecting abortion with a higher incidence of breast cancer.
There is a definite cover-up going on, as usual, to the detriment of women who are considering abortions.  See

California ProLife Council (CPLC) (www.californiaprolife.org.) is the largest statewide organization in California solely dedicated to pro-life issues.
