CURRENT LIFE ISSUES:

u
National Right to Life joins with countless others worldwide in expressing sympathy to the Schindler family over the death of Terri Schiavo. Terri died of starvation and dehydration today, nearly 13 days after her feeding tube was removed under court order.  We must redouble our efforts to protect those with disabilities.  We will continue working to ensure that they are not dismissed by some "quality of life" standard which dictates that some lives are less worthy than others.

u The media and others have seized on Terri Schiavo's starvation as a means to promote "living wills" or "advanced medical directives." WARNING! Many contain language that, once signed, will allow you to be starved to death! Food and water is not mandatory medical treatment.  NRLC has a "W
ill to Live" that will protect you and your loved ones from starvation and the pressures that surround these decisions. Examine and download a CA Version or read about the Will to Live and find other state specific versions at www.nrlc.org/euthanasia/willtolive/StatesList

u The Contra Costa Times has exposed more risks involved with Proposition 71.  The article, "Prop. 71 stem cell research stirs ethical debate" explores how stem cell research is significantly increasing the demand for women's eggs. "Scientists plan to use the eggs from as many as 1,000 women for therapeutic cloning...but some women's groups fear egg donors will face health risks." Learn more about stem cell research and the dangers posed to California by Prop 71!

u AB 654 (Berg/Levine), the bill to legalize assisted suicide, will be heard in the Assembly Judiciary Committee on April 12th.  The committee hearing will be held at the State Capitol; the public can attend AND offer commentary to the committee.  Even though Oregon's euthanasia law is proving to be problematic, CA Assembly Member Berg believes she has enough support to pass the bill.  Polls indicate that the majority of informed people oppose euthanasia! Inform your community and urge your legislators to oppose this bill!

u The Capital Resource Institute has teamed up with parents and Nevada County Supervisor Sue Horne to urge the Nevada Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees to change a controversial policy.  The policy allows students to leave campus without parental consent for the treatment of pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and other medical issues.  This policy, combined with the allowance for CA minors to have abortions without any parental notification or consent, has raised several red flags with parents and pro-life organization. Read the full story to learn more! California has experts on this school policy and can help you in your community. Call 626-859-2040 for information!
