CURRENT LIFE ISSUES:

u The House of Representatives has passed the bill requiring girls under the age of 18 to notify their parents before traveling to another state to have an abortion.  The Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (H.R. 748) passed Wednesday on a bipartisan vote of 270-157.  The bill next moves to the Senate, where Majority Leader Bill Frist said, "no matter how few people it affects, it's an important bill on the principles."  While the House has passed a version of the bill on two prior occasions, the Senate has never voted on it -- in part because pro-abortion lawmakers have held it up. Contact your Senators and urge
them to support this bill!

u Assisted Suicide is threatening California now more than ever!  which moves next to the Assembly's Appropriations Committee before a floor vote expected by May. The 'safeguards' built in to this bill are few and faulty and there are serious risks involved!  Governor Schwarzenegger has not yet taken an official position on AB 654; CPLC has materials in Spanish and English that make it easy to communicate with him and other legislators about this issue.  Find out how to urge legislators to oppose this bill!

There will be a rally at the Capitol, the morning of May 18th
to oppose AB654, JOIN THE EFFORT!

u A report by the NRLC Robert Powell Center for Medical Ethics exposes 40 states not honoring advance medical directives. In the wake of the Terri Schiavo case, authorities have urged Americans to complete advance directives, like living wills, to state in which circumstances they would want medical treatment, food, and fluids if they become incapable of making these decisions. However, the laws of all but ten states may allow doctors and hospitals to disregard advance directives when they call for treatment, food, or fluids.  Learn more about how to protect yourself and your family from starvation!
