CURRENT LIFE ISSUES:
Sorry to miss you last week! Technical difficulties prevented us from sending our weekly message. This should have you updated!
u A minor cannot receive aspirin at school without her parent's permission, but she can have an abortion without even notifying them. The facts about the Parental Notification Initiative are simple and powerful. By educating our communities about this initiative, we will help ensure a safer future for CA youth. The measure will be on November's ballot as Proposition 73; passage of Prop. 73 would require abortion doctors to notify a minor's parents 48 hours prior to her scheduled abortion. This significant legislation would not be subject to the state Supreme Court and is supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans. CPLC has materials for you to distribute at your church, school, and community organizations. Learn more about Prop. 73 and keep checking in for the latest updates!
u Assembly members Patti Berg and Lloyd Levine have secured the support of the California Democratic Party in their efforts to legalize assisted suicide. The bill, called the Death with Dignity Act, was barely able to pass through Assembly committees earlier this year and would not have passed a House vote. Berg and Levine used a legislative trick to keep it alive, hijacking a Senate bill to provide health care to the terminally ill poor and replacing it with their euthanasia bill. When it was clear the bill still did not have enough support to pass in the Senate, Berg and Levine sidelined it with the intention of reintroducing it in January. Don't let their stall tactics weaken opposition to this dangerous practice! Find out how to help protect California from euthanasia!
u The Senate bill to supply federal funds for destructive embryonic experimentation and cloning is not likely to receive enough votes to avoid a presidential veto. Senator Arlen Specter, who is sponsoring the bill, believes the bill will pass in the Senate, but not by the two-thirds majority necessary to override the veto that President Bush has promised to exercise. The President has staunchly refused to support the legislation and has instead shown approval for Representative Chris Smith's pro-life alternative, H.R. 2520. Smith's bill would increase the publicly available inventory of cord-blood stem cells by enabling the Department of Health and Human Services to contract with cord-blood banks to assist in the collection and maintenance of 150,000 cord-blood stem cell units. Unlike embryonic stem cells, cord-blood stem cells have proven successful in treating a variety of medical conditions and their collection does not depend on the destruction of human life. Learn more about different kinds of stem cell research and their ethical and scientific implications!
