CURRENT
LIFE ISSUES:
u
CPLC has officially launched the CA Parents' Rights
Coalition, a project established to pass Proposition
73 this November.
Prop. 73, the Parental Notification and Child
Protection Act, requires abortion doctors to notify a
minor's parents 48 hours prior to her scheduled
abortion. This legislation is supported by an
overwhelming majority of Americans; we need to make
sure people vote for it! Planned Parenthood and NARAL
are already pouring money into 'No on 73' campaigns
and courting news media. You can distribute
educational materials to your church, school, or
community group, hold an informational 'coffee-clutch'
meeting in your home, or simply donate to the
coalition! Learn
more about Prop. 73 and how to get it passed!
u Governor Schwarzenegger and Senator Dianne Feinstein joined with advocates of embryonic experimentation at a Los Angeles press conference this week. Senator Feinstein and Governor Schwarzenegger urged Congress to ban human cloning in all 50 states while protecting California's multibillion-dollar stem cell research initiative, which funds an institute dedicated to destructive embryonic experimentation and therapeutic cloning. Feinstein also encouraged voters to contact their U.S. Senate representatives and voice support for S. 471, the bill to provide federal funding for embryonic experimentation. President Bush has vowed to veto this bill if it passes the Senate with less than a two-thirds majority. For a clear explanation of stem cell research, cloning, and the opportunities and dangers they pose, check out CPLC's documentary, The Human Experiment!
u A study has been published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association claiming unborn children don't feel pain from abortions. JAMA's editor says she was "unaware" that the authors of the report include an abortion practitioner and a former NARAL staffer. Acknowledging the bias of the report, Dr. Kanwaljeet Anand of the University of Arkansas Medical Center said he and other specialists in development of unborn children have shown that babies feel pain before birth as early as 20 weeks into the pregnancy. Later-term abortion procedures, such as a partial-birth abortion "would be likely to cause severe pain." Anand says the report will upset other specialists who know more about fetal development than the reports' authors. Read NRLC's response to the JAMA article.
