CURRENT LIFE ISSUES:

u We're back! Although we were unable to pass Proposition 73, we are encouraged by positive response of so many. Thank you for all you did- it was a very close race! We've been anxious to return to our regular schedule of Facts of Life updates!

u Assembly member Patti Berg is planning to reintroduce her euthanasia legislation in January. This past year, your efforts were successful in preventing Berg and other euthanasia advocates from gaining a majority of support in either the Assembly or the Senate! We plan on doing so again in 2006 and are already preparing fight this bill. Learn more about euthanasia and Berg's deadly bill here!

u The Supreme Court has already heard oral arguments in the case of Gonzales v. Oregon. This case questions the constitutionality of Oregon's assisted suicide procedures of dispensing federally controlled narcotics. Former Attorney General John Ashcroft maintained that the drugs should only be dispensed for a 'legitimate medical purpose' and that euthanasia was not such a purpose. It is the pro-life position that the federal government should not be forced to facilitate assisting suicide through the use of federally controlled substances. Currently, Oregon law allows for adults with less than a 6 month life expectancy to obtain a prescription for such medication. It is the only legal method of assisted suicide in the United States.
