"Facts of Life" Email: May 25, 2005CURRENT LIFE ISSUES: u On Wednesday the California Assembly Appropriations Committee voted on the Berg/Levine proposal to legalize physician-assisted suicide and it passed by a slim one-vote margin. The bill, patterned after Oregon's Death With Dignity Act, would make CA the second state to legalize assisted suicide. The bill moves next to the CA Assembly before facing a decision by the Governor. It is very important that your legislators be informed about this issue and about your opposition to it! Their votes will reflect yours, so speak up! Call, fax or email Gov. Schwarzenegger; he has not taken a position on this bill! Be sure to contact your Assembly Representatives too! u The US House of Representatives approved H.R. 810, the bill to provide federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research. The vote was 238-194, just 50 votes short of the 288 needed to prevent a presidential veto. President Bush has vowed that federal funds will not be used to support research that requires killing human embryos, and released a statement Tuesday promising to veto the bill, if possible. The Senate only needs 67 votes to pass the bill and block the President's veto. Time is running out-- your help is needed to ensure the Senate will oppose this bill! Get all the facts and communicate with your senators, urge them to oppose H.R. 810! u The Supreme Court will take up a new abortion case this fall, raising the political stakes just as the court faces the possibility of replacing ailing Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist; the 80 year old justice is suffering from thyroid cancer. The last major Supreme Court abortion case splintered the justices 5-4. A similar split could occur again, with or without Rehnquist, with additional drama outside the court. A Rehnquist retirement would give Bush his first vacancy on the Supreme Court, and abortion would be the flashpoint in the debate over a replacement. The CPLC website
