CURRENT LIFE ISSUES:

u In a maneuver one opponent called “appalling,” Assemblywoman Patty Berg has removed language supporting health care for the chronically ill poor and replaced it with language that would permit doctors to assist their patients to kill themselves. “The authors hijacked a bill that had already passed the Assembly and is in the Senate so they would not have to show how truly weak their support was,” said Tim Rosales, a spokesperson for the anti-suicide coalition. The bill would make CA the second state to legalize assisted suicide. It is very important that your legislators be informed about this issue and about your opposition to it!  CPLC has postcards ready to send to your Assembly and Senate representatives, as well as Governor Schwarzenegger- you just fill in the names! Send us one too and we'll tell you how they voted on this issue! Check it out!

u State lawmakers met Monday with members of the committee charged with spending $3 billion in favor of human cloning and embryonic stem cell research. Prop. 71, passed by voters in November, created the committee along with the CA Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The committee had hoped to kill legislation that would hold them accountable on financial and organizational decisions. Sen. Deborah Ortiz, who was formerly a proponent of Prop. 71, sponsored the oversight bill. The measure received approval from a Senate election committee 5-0. If the CA legislature approves the measure, which needs a two-thirds vote, it could go on the ballot this November.

u An initiative that would allow CA parents to be informed when their teenager daughters are considering an abortion will appear on the ballot the next time state voters head to the polls The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that parental notification is constitutional as long as teens don't have to tell their parents in abuse situations. Supporters of the initiative believe that such an amendment could mean 20,000 fewer abortions in the state each year. Governor Schwarzenegger has not taken a stance on the parental notification proposal. CPLC will have more information on the initiative as it becomes available!

"We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference,
ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time,
add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee."
