Facts of Life Email: July 21, 2005CURRENT LIFE ISSUES: u The Parental Notification Initiative will be on November's ballot as Proposition 73. It is crucial that we educate our communities about this initiative and encourage everyone to support it! Passage of Prop. 73 would require abortion doctors to notify a patient's parents 48 hours prior to her scheduled abortion. This significant legislation would not be subject to the state Supreme Court and could reduce the number of California abortions by nearly 20,000! CPLC is working on materials for you to distribute at your church, school, and community organizations. Learn more about Prop. 73 and keep checking in for the latest updates! u AB 651, the bill legalizing assisted suicide, has been dropped! Assembly members Patty Berg and Lloyd Levine gave up after realizing the bill did not have enough support to pass in either the Assembly or Senate, but they will likely introduce the legislation again in January. While Berg claims to have the support of 70% of Californians, voters have been flooding their representatives with calls, emails and postcards to oppose this horrible measure. CPLC will keep you updated on the the status of this issue and will always provide the necessary information and materials to defeat it! u President Bush has nominated Judge John G. Roberts, Jr. to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Judge Roberts is a former clerk for ailing Chief Justice William Rehnquist and was once a legal counsel in the Reagan White House. NRLC warns that liberal pressure groups will insist that Senate Democrats filibuster against Judge Roberts, unless he pledges in advance to vote against allowing elected legislators to place meaningful limits on abortion.
