CURRENT LIFE ISSUES:

u Chief Justice William Rehnquist has passed away after battling thyroid cancer. He leaves a legacy of pro-life values and a commitment to justice. Appointed by President Richard Nixon in 1971, Rehnquist developed a strong pro-life legacy with is opposition to abortion and was one of just two justices in 1973 who dissented in the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that overturned laws prohibiting abortion nationwide. In 1986, President Ronald Reagan elevated Rehnquist to the Chief Justice position. With Rehnquist's death, President Bush faces another decision involving the Supreme Court and has elevated John Roberts' nomination to that of Chief Justice. u The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) is still trying to maneuver around the courts in order to obtain funding for cloning and destructive embryonic experimentation. The group is now promising a press conference where they will announce the winners of more than $45 million in grants aimed at training scientists at a handful of CA institutions. Just one problem: they don't have $45 million to give out. "We're going to...say we have a fabulous training program here, and that we are going to provide a work force for the country," said Zach Hall, the agency's interim president. "We're going to play that up." Committee chairman Robert Klein is hoping the positive PR will drum up some more donations until CIRM's sticky legal issues are ironed out. Read the complete story!
