CURRENT
LIFE ISSUES:
u A new poll conducted by CBS News claims that a majority of Americans favor assisted suicide. However previous polls show the nation is at least split on the issue or opposed to the grisly practice. The CBS News poll asked respondents if they thought "a doctor be allowed to assist the person in taking their own life" who "has a disease that will ultimately destroy their mind or body and they want to take their own life." And what may matter most, actual ballot votes on the subject, have Americans strongly opposed. California voters rejected an assisted suicide proposal by a 54 to 46 percent margin in 1992. Governor Schwarzenegger prefers that the issue be decided by the voters, rather than the Assembly and Senate, but euthanasia advocates Patti Berg and Lloyd Levine are going to reintroduce their assisted suicide bill to the legislature soon. Let's beat them to the punch! Order postcards to communicate your disapproval to your representatives! Make sure they vote AGAINST Berg's bill!
u During his State of the Union speech on Tuesday night, President Bush touted the significant decline in abortions that has been taking place and called on members of Congress to pass a comprehensive ban on all forms of human cloning. "There are fewer abortions in America than at any point in the last three decades," President Bush said. "These gains are evidence of a quiet transformation -- a revolution of conscience, in which a rising generation is finding that a life of personal responsibility is a life of fulfillment," the president explained. The House of Representatives has overwhelmingly approved legislation prohibit both human cloning for reproductive as well as research purposes. However, the measure has gotten caught up in the debate over embryonic stem cell research in the Senate. Read the full story at our news page!
