CURRENT
LIFE ISSUES:
u
President
Bush gave the keynote address at
the National Catholic prayer
breakfast on Friday morning.
In the presence of Catholic
cardinals, Chief Justice John
Roberts, and church leaders, the
president touted the pro-life
message and the Catholic church's
long-standing views in favor of
protecting life. After signing
several pieces of pro-life
legislation, the president is
continuing his pro-life policies.
The
Senate is preparing in the next
several weeks to vote on a bill
that would overturn President
Bush's limited on using taxpayer
dollars to pay for embryonic stem
cell research. Because the
research destroys human life, the
president said no federal funds
should be used for any new
embryonic research.
u Planned Parenthood has been seen by both sides the abortion debate as a secular defender of abortion. That image made it difficult for the nation's largest abortion business to make inroads into religious communities, but Planned Parenthood is redoubling its efforts to break into the Christian community with its pro-abortion mantra. At the Washington Hilton hotel on Friday, Planned Parenthood held a prayer breakfast with religious officials of various stripes who favor abortion. According to a New York Times article, there were prayers, cross necklaces and Scriptures, but the message was not the normal one people would expected from a gathering of religious leaders. u The California agency set up to raise and distribute funds under Proposition 71 has been unable to raise money because it's embroiled in two conflict of interest lawsuits. Now, a new attempt to get cash fast is coming under fire fore more conflicts of interest. The agency, in an effort to raise money quickly to begin funding research projects, has decided to sell naming right to big donors for just about everything imaginable. The board of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine is proposing selling name rights for office space at its headquarters, putting names of biotech companies on student fellowships, and anything else it can find.
