CURRENT LIFE ISSUES:

u The Supreme Court is expected to decide whether or not it will review a federal appeals court ruling striking down the national ban on partial-birth abortions. The announcement of the decision could come as early as tomorrow or Monday. In its bill, Congress included a lengthy section summarizing the research and information doctors had presented Congress showing the three-day long abortion procedure is never necessary to protect the health of a mother in an emergency situation. New Chief Justice John Roberts is expected to vote to uphold the ban as did former chief William Rehnquist. Read the complete story at our news page!

u A Swiss hospital has agreed to let an assisted-suicide organization help terminally ill patients take their own lives on its premises. A spokesman for the Vaud University Hospital Center confirmed reports that, starting in January, it would let the Exit society assist in the suicide of people already admitted to the hospital who can no longer go home. In addition to these new allowances, assisted suicide is only legal in the Netherlands and the state of Oregon. Assembly member Patti Berg is planning on re-introducing previously defeated legislation that would legalize the practice in California. u Cloning and embryonic stem cell research have been taking several hits lately, as the result of broken ethics laws and faked results in South Korea. The scandal has revealed what the pro-life community has long known: that embryonic stem cell research and cloning are wasteful, destructive, and completely without success. Unfortunately, these unethical practices and their empty promises overshadow the life-affirming and successful treatments using adult stem cells.
