CURRENT LIFE ISSUES:

u Recent reports out of India indicate that gender-selective abortions have taken the lives of over 10 million girls. Researchers based in Canada and India looked through data from a national survey, conducted among 1.1 million households in 1998, and at information about 133,738 births that took place in 1997. The study published by the London-based medical journal comes on the heels of a report last October by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which warned that infanticide or abortion was driving India towards a gender imbalance with alarming social consequences. Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Pakistan and South Korea face similar problems, the UNFPA said. Read the complete story at our news page!

u International shifts in attitudes toward euthanasia and assisted suicide reflect those in the United States, where Oregon has already legalized such practices. Several cases have seen judicial leniency, including severely reduced prison sentences and sometimes no punishment at all for the killings of spouses, parents, and children. These kinds of attitudes on the behalf of justices are dangerous, especially for the uninformed voting public! Learn more about euthanasia, including how you can help keep it out of the law books!

u Further developments in the scandals surrounding South Korea's embryonic stem cell research practices have shed light on the dangers of egg procurement. The fear that cloning would exploit women was the major reason the United Nations called for its ban last year. The U.N. was concerned that cloning would create an international market for eggs and egg donors that would exploit women. Side effects from the hormone therapies and procedures used to obtain the eggs range from hemorrhaging after surgery to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. "Let me give you the definition of ethics: it is good to maintain life and to further life. It is bad to damage and destroy life. And this ethic, profound and universal, has the significance of a religion. It is religion."
Albert Schweitzer
