CURRENT LIFE ISSUES:

u
A
recent survey of Latinos across California indicates that 64 percent oppose assisted suicide. Of those Latinos surveyed, 49 percent indicated that they “strongly disapprove” of doctor-assisted suicide, 15 percent “disapprove,” 17 percent “somewhat approve” and only 12 percent “strongly approve.” When respondents were read a series of arguments for and against assisted suicide, the number who “strongly oppose” assisted suicide increased to 58 percent. The League of United Latin American Citizens says the poll only reaffirms their long-held beliefs. "We took a stand against assisted suicide because we understood the opposition from within the Latino community. The Democratic leadership in Sacramento must listen to the opposition and end this distraction of doctor-assisted suicide; and instead focus on issues like education, access to health care and health insurance." Learn about how YOU can communicate your opposition to your Senate and Assembly representatives!

u A Congressional committee held hearings on the fallout from the international embryonic stem cell research scandal in South Korea, where a team of scientists falsified research supposedly showing the controversial science making significant progress. Lawmakers debated the ethical problems surrounding the research, including the need to destroy human embryos and obtaining donations of human eggs for research. "This scientific scandal is not an isolated incident of fabrication, without real application to US research efforts," he said. "Rather, it highlights the serious, inherent potential problems with research cloning and embryonic stem cell research, including but not limited to: exploitation, fraud, and coercion." Order your copy of The Human Experiment and find out what the media isn't telling you about stem cell research!

u Every year, pro-abortion groups encourage their members to honor abortion practitioners by holding protests or writing letters. A pro-life group is countering that with a "Day of Invitation" for them to leave the abortion business. Priests for Life is calling on pro-life advocates to pray for those who perform abortions or work at abortion facilities with the hope they will change their minds. The Catholic organization also wants pro-life people to use conversations and letters to the editor to remind other that numerous people in the abortion industry have gotten out. Joan Appleton of Wisconsin was a former nurse at an abortion business and knows the guilt and shame firsthand of working there. "There are many of us who have been where you are right now who are more than willing to help you through the transition," she says to abortion facility workers.
