CURRENT LIFE ISSUES:

u
Amnesty International has generally promoted curbing human rights abuses that many people can rally in opposition to, but now the human rights group wants to make abortion an international human right and target nations with pro-life laws. AI leaders have sent documents to its membership proposing three area in the abortion debate where the group could be involved. They say that abortion should become an international right and pro-life laws toppled in nations that have them. Thanks to Bush administration officials, the United Nations has not ratified documents declaring abortion an international right and the president will likely work to prevent that as long as he is in office. However, the AI documents say they will encourage NGOs who lobby at the UN to press for an international document saying abortion is a human right. Tell Amnesty International you don't want it to become an organization fighting to make abortion legal worldwide!

u A new Harris Poll finds that backing for the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that allowed virtually unlimited abortion is at its lowest point ever. Harris has been measuring public opinion on the infamous abortion case since the high court's decision in 1973 and found that Americans are now split on the decision. Previous Harris polls have found Americans supporting the decision, but a new Harris Poll finds that Roe vs. Wade is supported only by a slender 49 percent to 47 percent plurality. In other words, support and opposition are almost equal because the difference is within the margin of error. The poll likely would have found even more opposition to the Roe case, but Harris erroneously told respondents that the Roe v. Wade decision only allowed abortions within the first three months of pregnancy. Combined with the companion Doe v. Bolton case, Roe allowed abortion throughout pregnancy for virtually any reason. u In California, a girl who is under 18 year-old can't get a flu shot or an aspirin from the nurse without her parents knowing. But, she can get a secret abortion. Pro-life groups are hoping to change that and have four days left to get signatures on a petition for a state vote to do so. The Parents’ Right to Know group is collecting signatures on a petition to have a second chance at a vote to require parental notification before a teenager can get an abortion. For anyone wanting to sign the petition, May 8 is the last day to mail them. The group is getting close to its goal of 900,000 valid signatures and, as of late April, more than 700,000 signatures had been collected. More than one million petition sheets have been distributed and mailed to individuals and churches in California since February to get the initiative on the November ballot. Visit the web site and sign the petition today! Petitions can be mailed to Parents’ Right to Know, 1703 India St., San Diego, CA 92101.
