Documentary
Throws Back the Curtain The
Human Experiment: Understanding Cloning and Stem-cell Research This
new documentary clearly explains the cloning debate and appropriate as well
as inappropriate uses of stem-cell technology. The
video quickly and clearly explains what is at stake in this new abuse of the
scientific process. The
program, partially financed with a donation from Vincent Fortanasce M.D. and
California’s Physicians for
Compassionate Care, contains interviews with many of the nations leading
pro-life as well as scientific experts in this field. Wesley Smith; Wanda
Franz, PhD (NRLC President); Joni Earrackson-Tada; Richard Doerflinger; Rex
Greene; M.D.; and many others. Going
far beyond a ‘talking head format,’ the film shows some dramatic
footage. Scenes include the collection of cord blood cells, the positive
cures from adult stem cells, interviews and speeches from political
advocates from both sides, and the implications for science and society
should cloning and embryonic stem cell experimentation gain ascendancy over
the more promising and ethical use of other forms of stem cells. With
states across the nation seeking to follow California’s ‘lead,’ this
film is an important educational tool for this pressing debate. The
Virginia legislature introduced such legislation at the beginning of the
2005 session. The Virginia Society for Human Life (VSHL) quickly ordered
copies for each legislator on the committee and arranged a showing and
discussion of the real issues involved in stem-cell research. The bill was
immediately defeated. Brenda Fastabend of VSHL was very pleased with the
result and said of The
Human Experiment, “a compelling presentation, a very valuable tool which should be used as
extensively as possible.” The
film was originally produced in California in preparation for the recent
proposition battle that will now pour more than $3 billion dollars into
government sponsored cloning and embryonic research projects. Proponents had
spent in excess of 30 million dollars in the initiative fight. Pro-life
forces spent a mere fraction of that amount, just under $300,000.
Nevertheless the measure passed with only a 59% victory margin. Many
other states are also now facing similar proposals in both their
legislatures as well as through initiative proposals. Few voters, and in
many cases relatively few pro-life individuals, fully understand the nature
of the debate. Even many Californians who had once actively supported the
cloning initiative are only now realizing what it really does! The program is appropriate for all ages and a useful tool for classrooms, libraries, bible study groups, pro-life speaking engagements and anywhere people want to look at the full implications of this debate.
