FRED
THOMPSON MAKES PRESIDENTIAL ANNOUNCEMENT WHILE REPUBLICANS DEBATE
Washington, DC -- While his Republican counterparts debate in New Hampshire, former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson made an appearance on a late-night television program to announce his presidential bid. After several months of waiting, Thompson told talk show host Jay Leno "I'm running for president of the United States." Following the announcements, Thompson appeared in an online video on Thursday to make the bid official and he plans to follow it up with whistle stops in early primary states starting on Tuesday in Iowa. "I'm going to give this campaign all that I have to give," he promised, in an attempt to counter some concerns that he's too old to run a competitive campaign. Thompson is a former attorney best known for his investigative role in Watergate and his status as an actor on NBC's "Law & Order" and in character roles in dozens of movies. While Thompson took a solo route Wednesday night in announcing his plans, some of his rivals griped that he didn't make an appearance at the debate. "Maybe Sen. Thompson will be known as the no-show for the presidential debates," former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said. "Maybe we're up past his bedtime," Arizona Sen. John McCain joked. In recent months, Thompson has been touting his pro-life credentials. "I think Roe v. Wade was a bad decision. I think it was bad law and bad medicine," Thompson said in a recent appearance on CNN. "You don't just get up one day and overturn the entire history of the country with regard to nature and major social policy, without any action by Congress, without any action by the American people or constitutional amendment, and that's what happened," Thompson explained. The former Tennessee senator continued, "It shouldn't have happened. It ought to be reversed." During Wednesday night's debate, Mitt Romney was asked about his strategy to end abortion and Mike Huckabee called for a human life amendment to the constitution. Romney has come under criticism from other candidates for favoring a two-step approach to ending abortion -- one that is the traditional approach backed by most pro-life groups. He has said he prefers to see the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade and allow states the opportunity again to make abortion illegal. Following the high court's decision, he wants a constitutional amendment adopted to protect all unborn children by law. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee declined an opportunity from the questioner to criticize Romney's position and used his time to delineate his own. "I would look to see us have in this country what I helped lead in our state in Arkansas, and that’s a human life amendment to our state constitution," he told the audience. "It says that we believe life begins at conception and that we ought to do everything in the world possible to protect it until its natural conclusion, and that means that we truly value and respect elevate and celebrate every life," Huckabee said. AWARD-WINNING
MOVIE BELLA OPENS OCTOBER 26, PROVIDES FRESH ABORTION LOOK
Hollywood, CA -- The award-winning movie Bella has finally received the major distribution deal its producers and actors hoped for and now will hit theaters nationwide on October 26. The film provides a fresh look at the abortion debate form a loving perspective of a man who learns to have an appreciation for the value of human life. With its movies and music, Hollywood can make a significant impact on society and can change the face of the nation's attitudes on any topic. And changing the way the public approaches the issue of abortion is the top goal of the producers of Bella, a film that continues to generate a buzz a year after its victory at the Toronto International Film Festival. Bella is the story of a star Mexican soccer player who seemingly has all the fame and fortune the status as a sports star can afford. That is until he accidentally kills a little girl in an automobile accident and learns the value of human life. Without an over-the-top approach that features content directed at the pro-life community, it takes a more subtle tack that could cause millions of Americans to rethink their own views supporting abortion. LEADING
NATIONAL PRO-LIFE ADVOCATE D. JAMES KENNEDY PASSES AWAY
Washington, DC -- Noted evangelist and activist D. James Kennedy, a top pro-life advocate in the fight against abortion, has passed away. Just days after celebrating his 51st wedding anniversary, the founder of Coral Ridge Ministries succumbed to the lingering effects of his December heart attack. Under the theme "reclaiming America" -- Kennedy pursued the pro-life cause as a pastor, broadcaster, and organizer. Family Research Council president Tony Perkins told LifeNews.com that Kennedy was one of early leaders of the pro-life movement, beginning just after Roe v. Wade. "When religious leaders were contemplating how they could affect the culture, Dr. Kennedy did more than contemplate--he dove right in with the goal of restoring virtue to Congress and empowering the Church to lead the charge for change," Perkins said. "We are indebted to him for helping to blaze the trail for Christians to influence the political process," Perkins added. Praise for the pro-life work the evangelical pastor championed cross denominational lines. Priests for Life director Fr. Frank Pavone told LifeNews.com, "America has lost a strong and consistent voice for the most helpless in society." "The unborn and the physically impaired had a great advocate in Reverend Kennedy, who always pleaded for the vulnerable with love," he said. Source: Life News, September 7, 2007 KANSAS
