Advocates of physician assisted suicide market it
as a so-called “right” to determine one’s fate required by a
free society of autonomous individuals.
This sales pitch deceptively obscures the facts behind this
issue; facts which are covered up by the euphemisms
“Death with Dignity” and “Helping People Die”, to name
a few.
Physician assisted suicide is an assault on the elderly, the disabled,
the depressed. While
employing notions of autonomy and free choice, proponents of this
practice actually call into question the worth and dignity of these
individuals, who have the right to live and be respected as possessing
inherent worth regardless of age or physical and emotional condition.
Brian Johnston, Executive Director of the
California ProLife Council, exposes the insidiousness of this practice
in the video “Death as a Salesman; What’s Wrong With Assisted
Suicide”. This video
has been credited with playing a pivotal role in defeating the
euthanasia initiative sponsored by the Hemlock Society on the Nov. 7th
ballot. Early polls
indicated that the measure would pass with 70% support.
Through hard work and with the help of Mr. Johnston’s
video—which was shown in nearly 700 Maine churches--the measure was
ultimately defeated by a narrow 51% to 49% margin.
Euthanasia advocates have now targeted
California. Assemblywoman
Dion Aroner of Berkeley has promised to re-introduce her assisted
suicide bill, which came within a hair’s-breadth of passage last
session. We need to take
courage from our recent victory in Maine and do the same thing in
California. Every
church and organization that promotes life needs to educate its
membership. This video is
just the tool to do that.
